Autumn Bird Survey: 27 species recorded

On Saturday 28 March, eleven “eagle-eyed” participants met at the Visitor Centre and, led by Ian Moodie, set off to record their observations around the Sanctuary.

The morning was followed by a well-earned breakfast of raisin toast and a cuppa back at the Visitor Centre, where everyone compared notes. This year, 27 species were recorded — a few fewer than the previous survey, which may have had something to do with the immature Brown Goshawk circling overhead for part of the morning!

About our bird surveys

Bird surveys are held twice a year, in autumn and spring. Our next Spring “Breakfast with the Birds” is planned for Saturday 10 October — check the website closer to the day to confirm.

There is also a monthly bird list at the notice board in the Visitor Centre, where anyone can record their observations. These records have built up a substantial history of birds spotted at Blackburn Lake since the 1970s.
