Did you know?
The Environmental Education Program had its beginnings at Blackburn Lake Sanctuary in 1984, when volunteers from Friends of the Lake began offering guided walks for schools and other groups, using the knowledge and enthusiasm of local people to teach understanding and respect for the bushland environment.
Do you have a love of nature and the enthusiasm to share it with others in the community?
The City of Whitehorse Education Program is always keen to enlist volunteers to help deliver a wide range of environmental education programs held at:
● Blackburn Lake Sanctuary
● Yarran Dheran
● Other bushland/open space sites in the City of Whitehorse.
These programs are delivered to preschool and school-aged children.
Volunteers can lead small groups on guided walks, help with games and environmentally-themed activities, and other general classroom-style duties.
Sessions are run during school hours in school terms, and for school holiday programs.
Volunteers need a current Working with Children Check and National Criminal History Check.
Training is available online and through in-person sessions. To express interest, visit the Whitehorse City Council website.
The Blackburn Lake Sanctuary is a special place that sits at the origins of the Kooyong Koot tributary.
This Country, its creatures, lands, skies and waterways, has been continuously loved and cared for by the Wurundjeri peoples for over 60,000 years. We hope to walk with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung in caring for this place.
We acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung as the First Peoples of this area and pay our respects to their spirits, ancestors and elders.
